SALE NOW ON!

The BBC are campaigning to get everyone growing their own, which has to be good, and have produced some short video guides that I've got on the site.

When you start growing your own vegetables it can all seem awfully complicated but honestly it really is quite simple. Despite having written 2 books on the subject, if I'm honest, my best advice is to always read the back of the seed packets before you sow!

Of course, the books go into a bit more detail! Vegetable Growing Month by Month and
The Essential Allotment Guide

The video home vegetable growing guides are:

Tomato

Growing Tomatoes

This instructional guide covers how, when and where to sow your to tomatoes.

Carrots

Growing Carrots

This video is about sowing carrots in a large pot, although I'd suggest a larger size like half a barrel would give you better results.

Beetroot

Growing Beetroot

This video suggests sowing your beetroot in pots but I have to say I wouldn't do it this way. I'd sow directly into the ground. Each to their own though.

Lettuce

Growing Lettuce

They mention Lollo Rosso, the Italian frilly lettuce, but don't forget there's a huge variety of lettuces you can grow including cut 'n' come again.

Squash

Growing Squash

A quick introduction into when and how to sow squash. They recommend the variety Hunter which I've not tried but it sounds good.

As well as the animated instructional guides, they've got a downloadable guide and a blog on the BBC Web Site.
