Soil pH And What Effect It Can Have On Your Plants
'pH' refers to the acidity or alkalinity of your soil. The pH can range from very acidic - below 5.5 – to neutral – horticulturally this is 6.5 – to very alkaline – above 7.5. Extremes pH levels can cause you problems in your garden – Very Acidic Soils can result in magnesium deficiency and clubroot. Whilst the more Alkaline Soils can suffer from trace element deficiencies.
However, some plants can thrive in different types of soil – for example ericaceous plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons will love acid soils, but will suffer if you try to grow them in alkaline soil. So, if you"ve got alkaline soil in your garden but want to grow these type of plants you’d be best to grow them in a tub or container where ou can easily control the level of acid in the soil. |
