Plants need the correct light spectrum to produce healthy growth. Use artificial lighting to supplement daylight to increase the irradiance level for photosynthesis (this is reduced in winter by cloud cover and the height of the sun), increase effective day length (greatly shortened in winter), substitute for daylight in a dark room and force plant growth.
