Ways of Using A Greenhouse
A greenhouse creates a controlled environment to encourage the growth of plants and to extend the season.
There are four basic ways of using a greenhouse:
- As a Cold House - relying on the sun for heat and light. Can only be used from spring to autumn to produce bedding plants and to grow summer food crops. With plenty of ventilation a greenhouse can be used as an alpine house for alpines.
- As a Cool House ? maintaining a minimum temperature of 45 deg F (7.2 C) which enables the over wintering of tender plants.
- As a Warm House ? maintaining a temperature of 50 deg F (10 C) which is ideal for pot plants, propagation and year round crop production
- As a Hot House ? maintaining a temperature of 60 deg F (15.5 C). A never-ending variety of subjects can now be grown including tropical plants.
Positioning a GreenhouseA good greenhouse will last a lifetime so it's important to choose the right site. It should be flat and level with little shade. The large the better as whatever size of house you buy, you will always wish for a little more space as time goes by. |
