Feeding Your Worms

In order to produce the wonderfully rich worm cast and the garden liquid residue which is known as worm tea, you’ll need to feed your worms well. Fortunately they’re not too fussy and will happily munch through similar food to ourselves, but there are some dishes that worms will not like.

Here’s an idea of what to feed them…

Good for Feeding Worms

  • Vegetables and peelings
  • Fruit and peelings (but go easy on citrus fruits as they can make things too acid)
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds,
  • Bread (including pizza), Rice, Pasta, Cereals,
  • Crushed egg shells (they must be crushed),
  • Cakes and biscuits,
  • Sugar, Cheese and even Baked Beans
  • Cardboard and paper. Shredded paper is useful but be careful it isn't too dry and mix in well
  • Contents of the vacuum cleaner bag
  • Leaves (but not too many)

Avoid Feeding Worms

  • Meat and bones
  • Diseased plant material and poisonous plants
  • Garlic
  • Spicy food waste
  • Onion skins
  • Eggs
  • Dairy Products
  • Salt, and Oils
