History of Allotments in the UK

I’ve had a few emails from the USA asking what an allotment is and how did they get started so I’ve written an article explaining.

The history of allotments goes back further  than you might think. In fact you can argue they started before the Norman conquest of England!  That’s 1,000 years near enough. Before you go search for stone circles on your plot , the allotment as we know it really goes back to the 1800s and the General Enclosure Acts.

Anyway, whilst the rain continues to pour down on the British Isles, you might like to spend 5 minutes reading about the history of allotments.

I’m showing the movie ‘Grow Your Own’ (called The Allotment’ I believe in the U.K.) at our Retirement Village (Perth, W.A.) on Sunday and many Aussies were somewhat bemused and wanted to know what an ‘Allotment’ is. Thank you for the article – being a ‘Pommie’ I knew but didn’t know the history’. Great stuff – thank you!
