The small engines are collectively known as ‘Barn Engines’ because they were often used to drive small machinery in barns. For example they might drive a slicer that chopped up swedes for cattle food.
Enthusiasts hold ‘Crank Ups’, either at large Shows or small events of their own. I suspect that there is one somewhere every weekend, particularly if there is a traction engine rally.
Some of these tiny engines were made by Once Famous Names, such as Wolsley and Lister.
They are great fun to admire and to watch in action.
