Brassica Plant Offer
If, like me, you’re behind or have only recently got a plot then buying in plants instead of sowing seeds offers a way to catch up. The only problem with buying in brassicas is that you can’t find the variety you want. Cabbage round is not exactly descriptive!
The other big problem brassica growers suffer is, of course, club root. The chemical controls we could once buy are no longer available and although you can continue to grow brassicas on club root infected plots, it makes the task a lot harder. (See coping with clubroot)
Anyway, now we’re fortunate enough to have club-root resistant brassicas and Suttons have an offer on plants running for the next week or two.

Excellent Value Offer on Collection! Suttons have chosen these three varieties of brassica plants especially for their high resistance to club root disease. This disease attacks the roots of brassicas, stunting their growth, reducing their ability to take in the vital nutrients they need and thus reducing the yield considerably. Club root disease can be the reason your vegetables fail resulting in disappointment instead of enjoyment! Brassica Collection Offer45 Plants – £11.90 – Less than 30p per plant |
Excellent Flavour Quality Fine White Curds! Not only club root resistant, this cauliflower is also an excellent autumn variety. The fine white curds are well protected by the leaves and the heads mature naturally over a period of time which avoids a glut! A good source of vitamin C. Ideal for slimmers as it’s low in calories! Cauliflower can also help to maintain a healthy cholesterol level and is an excellent source of fibre. Cauliflower Clapton Offer15 plants for £5.95 |

Heavy Cropping! A top quality Maximus type with the added bonus of club root resistance. Crispus is very well adapted to growing under stressed conditions and reliably produces good crops of smooth dark green sprouts, that hold well on the stalks. The sprouts can be picked from September to November. Brussels Sprout Crispus Offer15 plants for £5.95 |

A Late-Summer Autumn Cabbage In trials this cabbage showed high resistance to club root disease producing an excellent crop on diseased land where other varieties failed. A superb late summer/early autumn cabbage, a round headed Dutch White type, producing solid heads which can weigh up to 2kg. Stands and stores well. Cabbage Kilaxy Offer15 plants for £5.95 |

You’re not late – it’s time for spring cabbages and I’ve not transplanted my leeks yet. Try local nurseries or visit the mail order suppliers for seeds and plants listed in the allotment shop.
