CJ - I don't think she wanted to ban showing, it just doesn't appeal to her. As I said, I don't grow for show, so no bias. I do think they are fun at village level but at the National's it's like the Olympics versus school egg and spoon races.

I think Jacqueline's comments very churlish. Why deprive people the pleasures of growing, showing and competing if that is what they want to do. It's not harming anyone is it?

Thanks for the kind comment, Phil. Much appreciated.

Jaqueline - I don't grow for show but the show growers contribute knowledge. We have talks at our NVS and I always learn something. I don't want huge onions, I want decent cauliflowers and the help I've had has got me there.

Allotments are many things to many people, they certainly help me retain some sanity.

Beautiful veg no longer impress me, now that I know how they are achieved. I think shows like Harrogate have had their day - just like the Miss World competition.
Natural beauty and natural looks or taste are for the 21st century, surely.
I never enter our Stockport Allotments Competition.
Going down to the allotment, for me, is to grow good enough veg and flowers, not perfection. Allotments are for escaping pressure and competition.

We had a stand at the flower show (Oakwood Aromatics with the Made in Yorkshire section in the arts and crafts tent). Wandering round I got a pair of thornproof gloves (I only wear them for thistles, nettles and bramble, of which he have the national collection). And, following hte advice in your book, I bought a box of dolomite lime and enough green manure to follow the potatoes on the allotment over the winter. Thanks for the book, it's been extremely useful so far and I'm sure will get more so.
