Planning the Allotment for 2005 Part 1 from Allotment Vegetable Growing

The Christmas break is the traditional time for planning ahead and since I have the flu so I can’t take advantage of the dry days. Time to plan what is going where next year.

First thing to do is to list what I will be growing. It amazes me how some people will grow things they hate to eat – might as well grow flowers!

Before planning this year I need to look at what has gone before and where I stand.

The size of the beds was determined by the pace of the digging originally. Because the paths are constructed from wood chippings, which have now nearly rotted away, it's no problem to re-size the beds.

The chippings have been renewed around the shed and the compost bin area. Beds 1 & 2 have been combined and the comfrey bed has been slightly reduced as the production is great and I don't need quite as much as I first thought.

The potatoes will be going into plot 29 so the plan is to finish digging over Beds 3 to 7 (harvesting the parsnips and leeks first), lime fairly heavily and reconstruct paths as the plan below.

Beds 1 & 2 have had the leafmould and some turkey manure, which will be rotovated in come the spring.
